Chana dal masala: Quick and flavorful Indian chickpea dish with onions and tomatoes. Ready in under an hour.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
  • 1 green chile pepper, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 4 cups chopped tomatoes
  • 4 cups cooked chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
  • 0.5 cup tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 lemon, juiced
Instructions:
  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, sauté onion, garlic, ginger, and green chile pepper in hot oil until onions are translucent, approximately 10 minutes.
  • Season the onion mixture with a flavorful blend of cumin, paprika, coriander, garam masala, turmeric, and cayenne pepper, stirring well. Cook the spiced onion mixture until fragrant, which will take about 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Combine the tomatoes, chickpeas, and tomato sauce in the pot. Let it simmer until the tomatoes are tender, approximately 5 minutes.
  • Blend in the yogurt until the mixture is uniformly colored. Let it simmer for an additional 5 minutes or until hot again.
  • Off the heat, mix in the lemon juice and salt until well combined.
