Halifax-style Donairs: Crispy meat slices, fresh veggies, and sweet tangy sauce in pita - a Canadian delight!
Ingredients:
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 0.33333334326744 cup bread crumbs
  • 1.5 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.66666668653488 cup nonfat evaporated milk
  • 0.66666668653488 cup sugar
  • 0.33333334326744 cup vinegar
  • 6 pita bread rounds
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 large onion, chopped
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  • Combine beef, bread crumbs, paprika, cayenne pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt in a large bowl until fully mixed. Press mixture into an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 2 hours until meatloaf reaches 160°F (72°C) in the center. Let it rest for at least 30 minutes before slicing for easier cutting.
  • Prepare the sauce by mixing evaporated milk, sugar, and vinegar in a jar with a lid. Shake vigorously to combine, then set aside.
  • Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Slice the meatloaf thinly and fry until golden on both sides. Set aside and keep warm. Deglaze the skillet with a splash of water and heat the pita rounds until soft and lightly browned.
  • Arrange meatloaf slices, tomatoes, and onion down the center of each pita round. Drizzle with sauce and fold pitas in half towards the center.
