Delectable homemade pizza sauce with rich flavors of garlic, onion, red wine, and fresh herbs. Enhance the taste with a long simmer and overnight chill.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 0.5 cup chopped onion (large chunks)
  • 5 cloves garlic, halved
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 (28 ounce) can tomato puree
  • 1.5 cups red wine
  • 0.125 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 0.125 cup chopped fresh oregano
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
Instructions:
  • In a skillet over medium heat, heat oil and sauté onion and garlic until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Combine tomato puree, red wine, fragrant basil, and savory oregano in the pot. Increase heat slightly and bring to a gentle simmer. Allow to cook until the sauce thickens to your liking, which should take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Stir in butter and sugar, then let it gently simmer for an additional 10 minutes. Take the pot off the heat, let it cool down, and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight before enjoying.
  • Strain out onion and garlic for a velvety sauce, or keep them in for a robust texture.
