Elevate cute hand pies with a twist of five-spice powder.
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup peeled finely chopped baking apple (1 large)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 box (14.1 oz) refrigerated Pillsbury™ Pie Crusts (2 Count), softened as directed on box
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Melt butter in an 8-inch skillet over medium heat. Add apple, sugar, five-spice powder, and 1 tablespoon water. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are crisp-tender. Remove skillet from heat and let it cool completely for about 30 minutes.
  • Unwrap the pie crusts and roll each one out into a 12-inch round. Use a 3-inch round cutter to make 10 rounds from each crust, and place them 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Spoon 2 teaspoons of apple filling in the center of each of the 10 rounds. Cut out a desired message with 3/4- to 1-inch letter- or word-shaped cookie cutters on the remaining 10 rounds. Place the cutout letters on top of the apple filling, slightly below the letters, to create a shadow effect. Press the edges firmly with a fork to seal the pies. Brush the tops of the pies with egg wash before baking.
  • Bake until beautifully golden brown, about 18 to 20 minutes.
