Indulgent sausage gravy and flaky biscuits, a breakfast treat fit for special occasions.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound sage flavored ground breakfast sausage
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 0.5 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 dash hot pepper sauce
  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 2 cups warm buttermilk (105 to 115 degrees F/43 to 46 degrees C)
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.33333334326744 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions:
  • Heat your oven to a toasty 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
  • Cook crumbled sausage in a skillet over medium-low heat until browned. Add onion and cook until tender; drain any excess grease. Gradually stir in flour for about 6 minutes until mixture is bubbly and golden. Pour in milk, nutmeg, poultry seasoning, salt, Worcestershire sauce, and hot pepper sauce. Cook, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens.
  • Prepare the biscuit dough by dissolving yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes. Add buttermilk and mix well. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in yeast-buttermilk mixture. Knead the dough gently on a lightly floured surface a few times. Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into biscuits using a 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 1/2 hours.
  • Place the dish in a hot oven for 8 to 10 minutes until it turns a beautiful golden color. Once done, take it out and generously brush the tops with melted butter.
