Decadent trifle with layers of pound cake, sherry, and custard, topped with sweet whipped cream. A cherished family recipe perfected over generations. Ideal for holidays. Saves well in the fridge, even better the next day!
Ingredients:
  • 1 quart whole milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 0.25 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
  • 1 (16 ounce) loaf pound cake, cut into 1/2-inch slices
  • 0.25 cup cream sherry
Instructions:
  • In a microwave-proof pitcher, heat milk in the microwave until it simmers, typically 4 to 5 minutes. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and 1/4 cup sugar. Slowly mix hot milk into the eggs and sugar. Transfer the custard to a saucepan and cook over medium heat until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 minutes. Chill the custard in the fridge covered with plastic wrap for several hours before serving.
  • Whisk the cream with the 2 tablespoons of sugar until stiff peaks form; reserve. Layer half of the pound cake slices on the bottom and around the sides of a trifle bowl. Drizzle with half of the sherry. Pour a third of the chilled custard into the trifle dish and spread evenly. Repeat layering with the remaining pound cake slices, sherry, and custard two more times. Finish by topping with the reserved whipped cream.
  • Chill the dish for a minimum of 2 hours with plastic wrap before serving to enhance the flavor infusion.
