Indulge in this comforting dish of homemade chicken and dumplings, a timeless recipe passed down through generations to delight your loved ones.
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 cup shortening
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 whole chicken
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 2 cups chopped carrots
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
Instructions:
  • Blend the flour and shortening in a bowl until it reaches a cornmeal-like consistency.
  • Whisk milk and egg together gently in a separate bowl. Combine with flour mixture to form a dough ball. Transfer to a floured surface, knead, and roll thinly with a floured rolling pin. Allow dough to rest for 2 hours.
  • In a large pot, generously cover the chicken with water. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 1 hour until the meat is tender and easily falls off the bone. Use a thermometer to ensure the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) at its thickest part near the bone.
  • Take out the savory chicken from the pot and effortlessly strip the tender meat from the bones.
  • After straining the broth, transfer it back to the pot. Stir in 2 cups of water and bouillon cubes. Add shredded chicken, celery, carrots, and onion. Boil the mixture for 15 minutes.
  • Cut the dough into 1-inch wide strips, tear them and add to the boiling broth. Boil until dumplings are cooked through, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, then serve.
