Modern twist on classic Southern apple pie using premade crusts for easy three-layer pie in cast iron skillet.
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 5 Granny Smith apples -- peeled, cored, quartered, and thinly sliced
  • 3 (9 inch) refrigerated prerolled pie crusts
  • 1 cup white sugar, divided
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • 0.25 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small chunks
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for the perfect cooking temperature.
  • In a 9-inch cast iron skillet, melt 1/2 cup butter in the preheated oven. Sprinkle with brown sugar and heat in the oven while you prepare the apples.
  • Take the skillet out of the oven. Place one refrigerated pie crust on top of brown sugar. Layer half of the sliced apples over the pie crust. Sprinkle half a cup of white sugar and one teaspoon of cinnamon on top. Add another pie crust on top of the apples; layer the remaining apples over it and sprinkle with half a cup of sugar and one teaspoon of cinnamon. Place the third pie crust on top; sprinkle with a quarter cup of sugar and dot with one tablespoon of butter. Make four slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
  • Place the dish in the oven that's already heated and bake until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown, approximately 45 minutes. Serve while warm.
