Transform grandma's 125-year-old secret recipe into irresistibly crispy cast iron fried chicken with just 5 simple ingredients.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 (3 pound) whole chicken, cut into pieces
Instructions:
  • In a big, cast iron skillet, warm up the shortening over medium-high heat.
  • In a brown paper lunch bag, mix flour, salt, and pepper. Add two chicken pieces, seal the bag, shake to coat. Cook coated chicken in a hot skillet, then repeat with the rest of the chicken until all pieces are coated and in the skillet.
  • Sear the chicken until beautifully golden, about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Lower the heat, cover, and let it simmer for 25 minutes. Uncover, raise the heat, and cook until the chicken reaches a deep golden brown color and the juices run clear, approximately 5 minutes more. Ensure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) when a thermometer is inserted near the bone.
