Grandma's comforting thick sauce served with corn muffins.
Ingredients:
  • 0.25 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 (4 ounce) cube steaks
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 stalk celery, chopped
  • 1 (6 ounce) can mushroom stems and pieces, undrained
  • 1 (1 ounce) envelope dry onion soup mix
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried oregano
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1.5 cups tomato juice
  • 1 cup ketchup
Instructions:
  • - Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), then heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Coat cube steaks in a seasoned flour mixture and sear them in the hot oil.
  • Place steaks in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with green pepper, onion, celery, mushrooms, oregano, and onion soup mix. Mix tomato juice and ketchup, then pour over the ingredients in the dish.
  • Roast in the preheated oven for around 1 hour, or until the meat is fully cooked and the sauce has thickened.
