Greek baklava: Crunchy phyllo, sweet walnut filling.
Ingredients:
  • 0.75 cup water
  • 0.75 cup white sugar
  • 0.25 cup orange juice
  • 1.5 cups honey
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups ground walnuts
  • 1 (16 ounce) package phyllo dough
  • 1.5 cups melted butter
Instructions:
  • Create a fragrant syrup by combining water, 3/4 cup sugar, orange juice, honey, and 1 tablespoon cinnamon in a saucepan. Boil over medium-high heat, then simmer on medium-low for 10 minutes. Let it cool to room temperature before using.
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) and generously butter a 10x15 inch baking dish.
  • Combine 3/4 cup of sugar with 1/2 teaspoon each of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground walnuts, mixing until well combined; set aside.
  • Layer phyllo sheets in pairs, brushing each pair with butter, until you have 12 sheets. Sprinkle 1/3 of the walnut mixture over the phyllo. Add another 6 buttered phyllo sheets. Sprinkle 1/2 of the remaining walnut mixture over the phyllo, then layer with 6 more buttered phyllo sheets. Finish by adding the remaining walnut mixture and the rest of the phyllo sheets, brushing the top with the remaining butter.
  • Bake the phyllo in the preheated oven until it turns golden brown and crispy, typically about 1 hour. Take it out of the oven and drizzle the cooled syrup over the warm baklava. Let it cool to room temperature before slicing into 1-inch squares or diamonds for serving.
