Slow-cooker split peas with ham, a timeless and flavorful combination.
Ingredients:
  • 7 cups water
  • 1 package (16 ounces) dried split peas (2 1/4 cups), sorted and rinsed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 medium carrots, cut into 1/4-inch slices (1 1/2 cups)
  • 2 medium stalks celery, finely chopped (1 cup)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)
  • 1 ham bone, 2 pounds ham shanks or 2 pounds smoked pork hocks
Instructions:
  • Combine all ingredients in a 4- to 5-quart slow cooker, then mix in the ham.
  • Cook on low heat for 8 to 10 hours until peas are tender, making sure to cover the dish.
  • Take the ham out of the cooker and transfer it to a cutting board. Shred the meat using 2 forks, discarding the bones and skin. Mix the shredded ham into the soup and stir well before serving.
