Southern-style hoe cake: A rustic bread traditionally baked on a farm hoe, now made in a cast iron skillet.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1.5 tablespoons shortening
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 2 pinches garlic salt
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Coat a seasoned cast iron skillet with shortening and let it heat up in the oven.
  • Combine flour and milk in a bowl until you achieve a thick yet pourable batter consistency.
  • Take the hot greased skillet out of the preheated oven, sprinkle a pinch of garlic salt on the bottom, pour in the batter, and sprinkle the top with another pinch of garlic salt.
  • Place the skillet back in the oven and bake for around 20 minutes until the cake has risen and the top is golden brown.
