Elevate your gatherings with Japanese onigiri: simple to prepare using sushi rice, nori seaweed, and customizable toppings.
Ingredients:
  • 0.66666668653488 cup short-grain rice, rinsed
  • 0.66666668653488 cup water
  • 3 sheets nori (dry seaweed), cut into 1-inch strips
  • seasoned sesame seeds to taste
  • shiso with hijiki (dried seaweed flakes) to taste
Instructions:
  • In a heavy-bottomed pot with a tight-fitting lid, soak rice in water for 20 to 30 minutes. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then lower heat and cook for 12 to 13 minutes until water is absorbed. Remove from heat, steam covered for another 10 minutes. Allow to cool to room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving.
  • Shape rice into triangle shapes or round balls using damp hands, then wrap each onigiri with nori strips. Finish by seasoning with salt and topping with sesame seeds and seaweed flakes.
