Berry-filled heart-shaped scones, perfect for baking with kids.
Ingredients:
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 1/2 teaspoons strawberry or raspberry preserves
  • Powdered sugar
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 400°F and lightly grease a cookie sheet.
  • In a medium bowl, gently whisk the egg. Add in milk, applesauce, butter, and almond extract. Stir in all remaining ingredients, except for the preserves and powdered sugar, until just combined.
  • Spoon out dough in 1/4 cup portions onto a baking sheet, spacing them 3 inches apart. Shape into 3-inch wide and 1/2 inch high heart shapes using floured fingers. Use the back of a floured spoon to create a shallow well in the center of each heart and fill each well with 1/2 teaspoon of preserves.
  • Bake until golden brown, then transfer to a wire rack. Dust with powdered sugar while still warm and serve.
