Ingredients:
  • 1 cup water
  • 4.5 cups white sugar
  • 4 cups black raspberries
  • 0.25 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 0.75 cup buttermilk
Instructions:
  • Combine fresh, vibrant raspberries with tangy lemon juice, sugar, and a touch of water in a large pot. Allow the mixture to come to a lively boil, then lower the heat, cover, and let it gently simmer for 15 minutes. Remember to stir occasionally, being careful not to crush the delicate berries.
  • In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Use a pastry blender or fork to cut in shortening until the mixture resembles peas. Stir in buttermilk until dough forms. If the dough is too stiff, add a bit more buttermilk.
  • After checking the pot, adjust the raspberry sauce if necessary by incorporating equal parts of sugar and water. Spoon the dumpling dough into the simmering sauce one tablespoon at a time. Cover and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Uncover, flip the dumplings, cover again, and cook for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from heat, rest for 10 minutes, then serve.
