Whip up these traditional Italian anise biscotti for a delightful Easter treat that pairs perfectly with coffee.
Ingredients:
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 6 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening (such as butter-flavored Crisco®)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 4 whole eggs
  • 2 teaspoons anise extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk, or as needed
  • 0.25 cup sprinkles, or as needed
Instructions:
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a bowl, combine shortening and white sugar until creamy. Mix in eggs one at a time. Stir in anise extract, vanilla extract, and milk. Gradually add flour mixture and blend until thick and creamy. Chill dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) for the perfect temperature to bake your delicious creation.
  • Sprinkle flour on your work surface and hands, then shape a quarter-sized piece of dough into a slender sausage. Create fun shapes like "s" curves, twists, or letters. Remember, the cookies will expand while baking, so keep them slim like a pinky finger. Arrange on a baking sheet, spacing them 1 1/2 inches apart.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes until light golden in color and golden brown on the bottom. Allow to cool completely for about 1 hour.
  • Combine confectioners' sugar and 2 teaspoons of anise extract in a bowl. Gradually mix in milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the icing is smooth and creamy, but not too runny. Coat cooled cookies with the icing and sprinkle with sprinkles.
