Try this speedy Japanese fried tofu appetizer - crispy tofu cubes paired with a flavorful sauce and fresh green onions.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) package firm silken tofu
  • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 1 teaspoon dashi granules
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour, or as needed
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 green onions, chopped
Instructions:
  • Sandwich the block of tofu between paper towels and place a plate on top. Weight it down with a 3- to 5-pound object and let it press for 15 minutes. Remove and discard the liquid.
  • In a saucepan, mix together water, soy sauce, mirin, and dashi. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, then remove from heat and set aside.
  • Discard excess liquid and pat dry tofu. Cut tofu into 3/4-inch cubes. Toss tofu in a bowl with flour until lightly coated.
  • In a heavy pot, heat oil until shimmering. Fry tofu until beautifully golden-brown, about 4 to 6 minutes, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Transfer to a serving dish, drizzle with sauce, and garnish with green onions.
