Create a festive pirate-themed birthday cake for the kids.
Ingredients:
  • 3 x 340g packets golden buttercake cake mix or 3 quantities Homemade buttercake (see below)
  • 3 quantities Buttercream icing
  • 1m licorice strap
  • Black writing icing
  • 1 1/2 x 14g packets Juicy Fruit chewing gum (12 pieces)
  • 250.00g butter, softened
  • 4.40 gm vanilla extract
  • 53.75 gm caster sugar
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 225.00 gm self-raising flour, sifted
  • 128.75 gm milk
  • 225.00 gm icing sugar mixture
  • 20.60 gm milk
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Lightly grease a 20cm round cake pan, a 15cm round cake pan, and a 24cm square cake pan. Line the bases and sides with baking paper.
  • Prepare the cake according to the instructions on the packet, or make a homemade cake.
  • Make homemade buttercake: With an electric mixer, whip together butter, vanilla, and sugar until fluffy. Incorporate one egg at a time, beating well after each addition. Fold in flour and milk until just combined.
  • Transfer the mixture evenly into the prepared pans and bake the 15cm cake for 35 minutes, the 20cm cake for 45 minutes, and the 24cm cake for 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 5 minutes, then carefully turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
  • Prepare delicious buttercream icing by using an electric mixer to whip the butter in a bowl until it becomes light and fluffy. Slowly incorporate the icing sugar mixture and milk, while continuously beating, until everything is well combined.
  • Place the 20cm cake on a board. Use a serrated knife and a 20cm round pan as a guide to cut an 8cm-wide crescent from the 15cm cake (refer to notes). Discard the trimmings. Securely place the crescent under the 20cm cake on the board using icing.
  • Cut the square cake into four 5.5cm x 11cm rectangles using a serrated knife. Then use a 3.5cm round cutter to cut 8 circles from the remaining cake. Arrange the rectangles and circles to form crossbones.
  • Set aside 2 teaspoons of icing. Spread the rest of the icing over the top and sides of the cake smoothly. Cut four 5.5cm pieces from the licorice for the eyes and position them on the cake. Cut two 3.5cm pieces from the licorice for the nose and position them on the cake. Cut the remaining licorice strap into thin strips. Cut one strip into three 10cm pieces and position them under the nose to create a mouth. Add chewing gum in the mouth for teeth. Arrange the remaining licorice strips around the edge of the cake to outline a skull and crossbones, trimming as needed. Use black writing gel to color the reserved icing grey, then smudge it over the teeth. Serve.
