Impress with a charming barn-themed cake for a harvest of compliments.
Ingredients:
  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ White Cake Mix
  • Water, vegetable oil and egg whites called for on cake mix box
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons red paste icing color (not liquid food color)
  • 2 1/4 cups from 2 tubs (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Vanilla Frosting
  • 3 rectangular buttery crackers
  • 8 pretzel sticks (3 inches long)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut
  • 2 drops green food color
  • 2 tablespoons shoestring potatoes (from 1.75-ounce can)
  • 3 or 4 animal crackers
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease a 15x10x1-inch pan, line the bottom with waxed paper, grease the paper, then lightly flour it, or simply spray the pan with baking spray with flour for convenience.
  • Prepare the cake batter according to the instructions on the box in a large bowl, then pour it into a pan. Bake for 21 to 27 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool for 5 minutes before removing it from the pan onto a cooling rack. Peel off the waxed paper and let it cool completely for about 45 minutes. Finally, freeze the cake for approximately 30 minutes until it is very firm.
  • Transfer the cake onto a sturdy 17x12-inch cardboard covered with foil, following the diagram to cut along the roof line and silo outline.
  • Blend the red icing color into 1 container of the frosting until you achieve the perfect red shade. Frost the barn and silo, leaving out the upper rounded section, with the red frosting. Use a rubber spatula to create vertical lines on the cake, resembling wooden boards.
  • Position 2 crackers next to each other on the surface to serve as the doors of the barn. Gently place 1 cracker at an angle beneath the top of the barn to create a window; press it into the frosting. Surround the window and doors with pretzel sticks, and form an X on each door using the remaining pretzel sticks.
  • Transfer 1/2 cup of white frosting into a decorating bag with a small star tip. Use the bag to pipe frosting along the edge of the roof and fill in the top rounded section of the silo.
  • Mix desiccated coconut and vibrant green food coloring in a sealed container until the coconut is uniformly tinted. Spread the coconut along the base of the cake to create a lush grassy effect. Decorate the cake with crispy shoestring potatoes to simulate hay in the window and at the base. Finally, place adorable animal crackers on top of the grass. Store the cake with a loose cover.
