Holiday must-have: Crispy anise seed pizzelle from a treasured family recipe.
Ingredients:
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 6 eggs
  • 1.5 cups white sugar
  • 0.75 cup shortening (such as Crisco®), melted and cooled slightly
  • 2 tablespoons shortening (such as Crisco®), melted and cooled slightly
  • 1 tablespoon anise seeds, crushed
Instructions:
  • Preheat the pizzelle iron as directed by the manufacturer.
  • Combine the flour and baking powder in a bowl.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, whisk together eggs and sugar until well-blended. Incorporate 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons shortening, then gradually add the flour mixture until fully combined. Gently fold in anise seeds and fragrant vanilla extract using a spatula.
  • Place a teaspoon of batter onto the hot iron. Bake until golden, about 30 to 40 seconds, or slightly longer for darker pizzelle.
