Spiced Swedish wine punch with whiskey and rum. Perfect for a cozy holiday gathering!
Ingredients:
  • 5 (750 milliliter) bottles port wine
  • 1 (750 milliliter) bottle 100 proof bourbon whiskey
  • 1 (750 milliliter) bottle white rum
  • 1 (3 inch) cinnamon stick
  • 1 (3 inch) strip of orange peel
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 3 whole cardamom pods, cracked
  • 1 (8 inch) square of cheesecloth
  • 0.75 cup white sugar
  • 1 (15 ounce) package dark raisins
  • 1 (6 ounce) package blanched slivered almonds
Instructions:
  • In a large stockpot with a lid, gently warm the port wine over medium heat until it's almost simmering. Stir in the bourbon and rum, and continue to heat until it's just below a simmer. Remember to keep the bottles and caps for storing any leftover glögg later on.
  • Wrap cinnamon stick, orange peel, cloves, and cardamom pods in a square of cheesecloth, tying it with kitchen twine to secure; set aside.
  • Once the wine mixture is very hot, but not boiling, ignite it with a long-handled match. Using a heatproof cooking mitt, slowly add sugar into the flames and let it burn for 1 minute. Cover the stockpot with a lid to put out the flames and switch off the heat. Allow the mixture to cool, covered, for about 10 minutes.
  • Combine the cheesecloth spice bundle, raisins, and almonds with the warm wine mixture and allow it to cool to room temperature for about 1 hour.
  • Sieve the chilled glögg, keeping the raisins and almonds aside.
  • Warm the glögg in a saucepan over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes without letting it simmer. Pour 3 ounces of the warm glögg into a small coffee cup or Swedish-style glögg mug, and top each serving with reserved raisins and almonds for a beautiful presentation.
