Orange cinnamon rolls: tender, sweet, sticky perfection.
Ingredients:
  • 0.75 cup warm whole milk (110 degrees F (43 degrees C))
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 large egg yolk, at room temperature
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1.5 teaspoons freshly grated orange zest
  • 0.25 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour, divided, or more as needed
  • 1.5 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 0.25 teaspoon kosher salt
Instructions:
  • Add warmed milk to the stand mixer bowl with the paddle attachment. Sprinkle yeast over the milk and let it foam for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Combine egg, egg yolk, butter, honey, orange zest, and orange juice with the yeast mixture. Mix on low for about 45 seconds until combined. Incorporate 2 cups of flour on low speed until a wet dough forms, for about 1 minute. Switch to the dough hook attachment, add 1 1/2 cups of flour and salt, then beat on medium for 7 to 10 minutes until dough is soft and elastic. If needed, add up to 1/2 cup of flour slowly until a soft, sticky dough forms.
  • Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a large greased bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise at room temperature until it doubles in size, approximately 1 hour.
  • In a bowl, whisk together butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and orange zest until smooth and creamy, approximately 1 minute. Set aside.
  • Gently deflate the dough and place it on a generously floured surface. Roll out the dough into a 10 x 18-inch rectangle. Evenly distribute the filling over the dough, leaving a 1/2 inch border at the top edge.
  • Roll the dough towards you to form a log, then pinch the seam to close.
  • Cut the dough log into 12 even rolls that are approximately 1 1/2 inches wide. Place the rolls into a greased 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and allow them to rise at room temperature until they are puffy and almost doubled in size, which should take about 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake rolls in the preheated oven until beautifully golden brown, about 22 to 25 minutes.
  • While the rolls are baking, make the frosting by mixing cream cheese, powdered sugar, orange zest, and salt in a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. Beat on medium-high speed until smooth and creamy for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • After baking, place the rolls on a wire rack to cool for 2 minutes. Spread the frosting evenly over the warm rolls and serve.
