Indulge in homemade Bavarian pretzels - soft, chewy, golden brown delights with crispy sea salt specks.
Ingredients:
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided, or more as needed
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1.33 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sea salt, or to taste
Instructions:
  • Collect all the ingredients.
  • Combine 1 cup flour, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Add water and softened butter, mix until smooth. Allow to rest until bubbles form, approximately 15 minutes.
  • Incorporate salt into yeast mixture, then slowly add 2 1/2 cups of flour until dough forms a cohesive ball.
  • Continue kneading the dough until it is smooth and elastic for about 8 minutes, adding extra flour as necessary.
  • Divide the dough into 6 pieces, then allow it to rest for a few minutes.
  • Roll one piece of dough into a 15-inch rope, then shape it into a pretzel. Place on baking sheet and shape the rest. Cover and let rise for 15 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to a toasty 450 degrees F (220 degrees C) and grease a baking sheet.
  • In a pot, bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Add baking soda, stir well, and then remove from the heat.
  • Submerge the pretzels in the water bath for approximately 45 seconds, ensuring to flip them over halfway through.
  • Place the soaked pretzels onto the baking sheet, then generously brush them with melted butter and sprinkle with salt for enhanced flavor.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until beautifully golden, about 8-10 minutes.
