Irresistible homemade Parker House rolls, a holiday crowd-pleaser.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 cup warm water (110 to 115 degrees F/43 to 46 degrees C), divided
  • 1 cup warm milk (110 to 115 degrees F/43 to 46 degrees C)
  • 6 tablespoons white sugar
  • 5.5 cups all-purpose flour, divided, or more as needed
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions:
  • In a bowl, combine yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar with 1/2 cup warm water. Allow the mixture to sit until it becomes foamy, about 10 minutes.
  • Combine warm milk, 6 tablespoons of sugar, salt, and the remaining 1/2 cup of warm water into the yeast mixture. Whisk in 2 cups of flour gradually until smooth. Then mix in the remaining 3 1/2 cups of flour, egg, and 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil until a soft dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and knead for 6 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, ensuring the top is greased as well. Cover the bowl with a damp towel and allow it to rise in a warm room until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
  • Lightly punch the dough to release any air pockets, then divide it in half. Roll out each half on a floured surface until it is between 1/3 to 1/2-inch thick. Cut out circles using a floured 2 1/2-inch round cutter, and brush each circle with melted butter.
  • Create an asymmetrical crease in each dough circle using the blunt side of a table knife. Fold the dough along the crease with the larger half on top and press firmly along the folded edge.
  • Prepare the baking sheet by greasing it.
  • Place the folded dough circles on the baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced 2 to 3 inches apart. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap and allow them to rise until doubled in size, approximately 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), then uncover the dough.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown. Then, transfer the rolls to a wire rack to cool.
