Homemade Vietnamese beef Pho with authentic flavorsome broth - a delicious noodle soup to make at home.
Ingredients:
  • 4 pounds beef soup bones (shank and knee)
  • 1 medium onion, unpeeled and cut in half
  • 5 slices fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 pods star anise
  • 2.5 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 4 quarts water
  • 1 (8 ounce) package dried rice noodles
  • 1.5 pounds beef top sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 0.5 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onion
  • 1.5 cups bean sprouts
  • 1 bunch Thai basil
  • 1 medium lime, cut into 4 wedges
  • 0.25 cup hoisin sauce
  • 0.25 cup chile-garlic sauce (such as Sriracha®)
Instructions:
  • Prepare all your fresh and flavorful ingredients for a delightful culinary experience.
  • Heat your oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • Arrange the beef bones on a baking sheet and let them become beautifully golden in the preheated oven for around 1 hour.
  • Roast onion halves on a separate baking sheet until they are charred and tender, approximately 45 minutes.
  • Place beef bones and onion halves in a large stockpot. Add ginger, salt, star anise, fish sauce, and 4 quarts of water; bring to a boil. Simmer over low heat for 6 to 10 hours. Strain the broth into a saucepan and keep it aside.
  • Soak rice noodles in a generous bowl of cool water for an hour. Drain well before using.
  • After soaking for 1 hour, gently heat the reserved broth until it simmers.
  • 1. Boil a large pot of water. Add noodles and cook for 1 minute. Drain noodles.
  • In 4 serving bowls, evenly distribute the noodles. Add sirloin, cilantro, and green onion on top. Pour the hot broth over the ingredients. Gently stir and allow the beef to partially cook until no longer pink, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Garnish with bean sprouts, fragrant Thai basil, zesty lime wedges, hoisin sauce, and spicy chile-garlic sauce for a flavorful presentation.
