1930s Family Recipe: One-Bowl Eggless Cake, No Mixer Required.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups raisins
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.75 cup shortening
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and prepare a 9x13-inch pan by greasing and flouring it.
  • Combine raisins, water, brown sugar, and shortening in a saucepan. Simmer for 3 minutes until thickened. Allow to cool off the heat.
  • In a large bowl, mix together flour, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Once the raisin mixture has cooled, add it to the dry ingredients and thoroughly combine.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, ensuring not to overbake. Test for doneness after 30 minutes by inserting a clean toothpick into the center of the cake.
