Experience award-winning buttermilk biscuits, straight from my grandmother Sadie's northern Canadian prairie recipe.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup lard
  • 2 cups buttermilk
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
  • Combine flour, salt, baking soda, cream of tartar, and baking powder in a bowl. Cut in lard with a pastry blender until crumbly, then mix in buttermilk. Transfer to a floured surface and gently knead to form a moist dough.
  • Roll the dough out to a luxurious 1-inch thickness, cut the biscuits using a cookie cutter or a sleek round glass, and elegantly place them on an ungreased baking sheet.
  • Bake until the tops are beautifully golden, around 12 minutes in the preheated oven.
