Basque-inspired Spanish gin and tonic with citrus, spices, and herbs for a refreshing and elevated cocktail experience. Enhance the flavors of the gin with carefully curated ingredients for a summer sensation.
Ingredients:
  • star anise
  • 2 ounces gin
  • 4 to 6 ounces tonic water, or to taste
  • sliced fresh lemon and/or citrus zest
  • fresh thyme
Instructions:
  • Fill a large, elegant red wine glass with fresh ice, leaving just a little space at the top.
  • Select a variety of whole spices that enhance the gin's botanicals like juniper berries, peppercorns, star anise, cardamom pods, cloves, and cinnamon sticks. For a bolder taste, gently crush the spices with your fingers or the back of a knife before adding them to the glass.
  • Pour the gin into the glass, followed by gently pouring in the tonic to preserve its carbonation. Opt for a "Mediterranean style" tonic for a less bitter taste with hints of rosemary and lemon for optimal results.
  • Place your preferred citrus fruit slices or zest into the drink. Gently push the ingredients down with a cocktail stirrer or spoon, then lightly mix the drink. Avoid stirring too forcefully.
  • Add a variety of fresh herb sprigs like basil, thyme, mint, rosemary, or tarragon. For increased flavor, gently crush the herbs between your hands or fingers to release the essential oils.
  • Allow the drink to chill thoroughly by serving it 3 to 5 minutes after mixing.
