Tomato and Basil Pasta Sauce

Simmer canned tomatoes with balsamic vinegar, sugar, red pepper flakes, and fresh basil for a flavorful sauce.
Ingredients:
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans tomatoes, chopped
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
  • 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons white sugar
  • 0.75 cup basil leaves, torn into pieces
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
Instructions:
  • In a skillet over medium heat, sauté onion and garlic in olive oil until tender, about 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, red pepper flakes, vinegar, and sugar; bring to a boil, then simmer on low for 45 to 60 minutes. Finish by stirring in basil, and season with salt and pepper.
