Delightful owl birthday cake with free template included for a memorable celebration.
Ingredients:
  • 2 x 600g packets vanilla cake mix
  • 250g unsalted butter, chopped, softened
  • 300.00 gm icing sugar mixture
  • 51.50 gm milk
  • 180g white chocolate, melted
  • 1 tube yellow writing icing
  • 28.05 gm desiccated coconut
  • 2 large black jelly beans
  • 2 tsp chocolate dollarettes
  • 6 x 2.5cm-long black licorice strips
  • 2.5cm-thick slice banana tip, halved crossways
  • 1 blanched almond
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 180°C. Grease a 26cm x 36cm baking pan that is 3cm deep and line it with baking paper. Prepare the cake batter as instructed on the packet, then pour it into the pan. Bake for 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake sit in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Using the owl template as a guide, carve the cake into an owl shape and place it on a cake board.
  • In a small bowl, use an electric mixer to beat butter until pale. Gradually add icing sugar mixture and milk, beating constantly until well combined. Spread the buttercream over the top and sides of the cake.
  • - On a piece of baking paper, trace a 20cm square using a pencil. Pour the melted chocolate onto the square and spread it evenly. Allow it to rest for 30 minutes or until nearly firm. Using a small, sharp knife, carefully cut out four 14cm-long feathers from the chocolate square following the provided template. Chill the feathers in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or until completely set.
  • For decorating: With yellow icing, create a heart-shaped outline for the face with a 2.5cm border. Sprinkle coconut on the owl's head outside the border, then all over the top and sides of the cake. Place jelly beans as eyes, sprinkle dollarettes on the base, and position feathers and licorice as talons on the cake.
  • Place a banana piece as the beak and an almond, pointed end down, at the base of the banana piece for a fun and playful presentation.
