Fluffy angelic biscuits made with yeast, baking powder, and baking soda for ultimate fluffiness. Perfect for breakfast or as a dinner side dish, ready in under an hour. Brush with melted butter for a heavenly finish.
Ingredients:
  • 1 package regular or quick active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 2 tablespoons warm water (105° to 115°)
  • 2 1/2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • About 1 cup buttermilk
  • Butter or margarine at room temperature, if desired
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water; let it sit.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add shortening and blend with a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Gently stir in the yeast mixture and the right amount of buttermilk until the dough comes together and forms a ball.
  • Transfer the dough onto a well-floured surface and gently roll it to coat with flour. Lightly knead it 25 to 30 times, adding more flour if needed. Roll or pat it to a 1/2-inch thickness and cut with a floured 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter. Arrange the cut dough pieces about 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 12 to 14 minutes until golden brown, then transfer from the baking sheet. Brush with butter and serve hot.
