Fluffy dinner rolls with yeast, eggs, milk, and hint of anise seeds - ideal for festive meals.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 (.25 ounce) envelopes active dry yeast
  • 1 quart water, divided
  • 0.66666668653488 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons anise seeds
  • 8 cups all-purpose flour, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Heat the milk in a pan until bubbles form around the edge. Remove from heat and cool to lukewarm (110 degrees F/45 degrees C).
  • In a cup of warm water (110°F/45°C), dissolve the yeast, then let it rest for 5 minutes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine shortening, sugar, eggs, salt, and anise seeds. Stir in the milk and yeast mixture. Gradually mix in flour to form a soft dough (add more flour if needed). Cover with a clean cloth and let dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.
  • Prepare baking sheets by lightly greasing them. Punch down the dough, divide into two pieces, and roll each piece into a 1/2 inch thick rectangle. Cut the dough into 8x1 inch strips. Twist each strip into a knot shape and place on the greased baking sheets. Cover with a clean cloth and let rise until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
  • Heat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Add a generous quart of water to a pan and bring it to a vigorous boil. Swiftly dip each roll into the boiling water before returning them to the baking sheet.
  • Bake rolls until tops are beautifully golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes in a preheated oven.
