Flavorful Asian beef ribs, perfect for easy family meals and meal prep.
Ingredients:
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) dark soy sauce
  • 100g (1/2 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar
  • 80ml (1/3 cup) Chinese cooking wine
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese five spice
  • 1 orange, rind cut into thick strips, juiced
  • 4 garlic cloves, sliced
  • 25g fresh ginger, peeled, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes
  • 4 whole star anise
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 6 green shallots, cut into 5cm lengths
  • 500ml (2 cups) beef style liquid stock
  • 1.5kg beef short ribs
  • 2 bunches broccolini, trimmed, steamed
  • Sesame seeds, to serve
  • Steamed jasmine rice, to serve
  • Green shallots, to serve
Instructions:
  • Mix together soy sauce, sugar, cooking wine, five spice, orange zest and juice, garlic, ginger, chili, star anise, cinnamon, shallot, and stock in a medium bowl until well combined.
  • Place the ribs in a spacious glass or plastic container and cover with the marinade.
  • Transfer the broccolini to a different airtight container, either glass or plastic.
  • Chill containers in the freezer for up to 3 months or until the night before using. Thaw overnight in the fridge.
  • Preheat the oven to 160C/140C fan forced. Transfer the beef from the container to a large roasting pan, mix well, cover with baking paper and foil, and bake for 3-31⁄2 hours until nearly tender.
  • Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan forced. Uncover ribs and continue baking for another 30-45 minutes until beef is tender. Microwave broccolini until warm. Garnish ribs with additional curled shallot and sesame seeds. Serve with broccolini and rice.
