Easy homemade hamburger buns with a soft, fluffy texture. Brush with egg wash for a golden finish before baking.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 5.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 (.25 ounce) envelope active dry yeast
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water
Instructions:
  • In a saucepan, mix milk, 1 cup of water, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil, then cool until lukewarm to activate the yeast without killing it.
  • Combine flour and yeast in a large bowl, then add wet ingredients and mix until the dough comes together. Use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 8 minutes or knead by hand on a floured surface for 10 minutes. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
  • Divide the dough into 12 portions slightly larger than golf balls. Shape each into a tight ball by pulling the dough tightly around and pinching at the bottom. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil. After a minute, flatten each ball to 3-4 inches wide using your oiled palm. Let the rolls rest until they double in size, around 20 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Combine the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of water in a small bowl, then brush onto the tops of the rolls. Place 2 oven racks in the middle of the oven for even baking.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. After removing from the oven, rotate the rolls to ensure even browning. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until golden on top and bottom.
