Use a bread machine for effortless mixing and kneading, making the process sweet and simple.
Ingredients:
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups Gold Medal™ Better for Bread™ flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons bread machine yeast
  • 1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Gold Medal™ Better for Bread™ flour
  • 1/4 to 1/ cup apricot preserves
  • 1 egg, beaten, if desired
  • 2 tablespoons sliced almonds
Instructions:
  • In the bread machine pan, combine all ingredients, excluding cream cheese, 1 1/2 tablespoons flour, preserves, beaten egg, and almonds, following the manufacturer's recommended order.
  • Choose the Dough/Manual cycle and avoid using the Delay cycle.
  • Remove the dough from the pan with lightly floured hands, cover, and let it rest on a lightly floured surface for 10 minutes. Then, combine cream cheese with 1 1/2 tablespoons of flour.
  • Prepare a 9x1 1/2 inch round pan by greasing it. Roll the dough into a 15-inch circle and place it in the pan, allowing the edges of the dough to drape over the sides. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the dough, then spoon the preserves on top. Cut the edges of the dough into 1-inch intervals, stopping about 1/2 inch above the cream cheese. Twist pairs of dough strips together and fold them over the cream cheese. Cover the pan and let it rise in a warm place for 40 to 50 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Brush dough with beaten egg and sprinkle with almonds. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting.
