Effortlessly make perfect bread dough with a bread machine, then shape a decadent, classic loaf.
Ingredients:
  • 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
  • 3 1/4 cups Gold Medal™ Better for Bread™ flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seed
Instructions:
  • Place all ingredients, excluding the egg yolk, cold water, and poppy seeds, into the bread machine pan following the manufacturer's recommended order.
  • Choose the Dough/Manual cycle, avoiding the Delay cycle option.
  • Take the dough out of the pan, using your lightly floured hands, then cover and allow it to rest for 10 minutes on a lightly floured surface.
  • Prepare the cookie sheet by greasing it. Divide the dough into thirds and roll each third into a 13-inch rope. Place the ropes beside each other and gently braid them, starting from the middle. Pinch the ends to seal them and tuck them under the braid. Place the braid on the cookie sheet and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes or until it doubles in size. You'll know the dough is ready when an indentation remains if you touch it.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F. Brush loaf with a mixture of egg yolk and cold water, then sprinkle with poppy seeds. Bake for approximately 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
