Spicy Cajun fried fish customizable to your taste with tartar or hot sauce. Perfect for appetizers or as a main dish!
Ingredients:
  • 2 pounds catfish fillets, cut into 2 inch pieces
  • 1 cup milk, or as needed
  • 1 egg
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1 dash pepper sauce (such as Frank's Red Hot®)
  • 0.25 cup oil for frying, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Marinate fish in milk for a minimum of 30 minutes.
  • Whisk egg and hot pepper sauce in a small bowl. In another bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, pepper, mustard, and Cajun seasoning. Dip fish in dry mix first, then egg, then dry mix again. Chill on a plate in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to help the batter adhere.
  • Heat generous amount of oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Fry fish for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown, adjusting Cajun seasoning as desired for browning.
  • Pat the fish dry with paper towels and serve with your choice of hot sauce or tartar sauce. Enjoy your delicious meal!
