Indulge in a cozy and sophisticated caramel-glazed treat, perfect hot or cold.
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups very warm milk
  • Ground nutmeg
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In a heavy 1-quart saucepan, melt 1/2 cup sugar over low heat, stirring constantly until golden brown. Pour the caramelized sugar evenly into six 6-ounce custard cups, swirling to coat the bottoms. Let the syrup set in the cups for about 10 minutes.
  • In a medium bowl, combine eggs, 1/3 cup of sugar, vanilla, and salt. Gradually mix in milk. Pour the mixture over the syrup in cups and sprinkle with nutmeg.
  • Place the cups in a 13x9x2-inch rectangular pan on the oven rack, then pour very hot water into the pan until it reaches within 1/2 inch of the tops of the cups.
  • Bake for around 45 minutes or until a knife inserted between the center and edge comes out clean. Remove cups from the water and let them cool for 30 minutes. Cover and refrigerate until serving for up to 48 hours.
  • To unmold the custard, delicately run a knife or small spatula along the sides. Then, place a dessert dish or plate on top of the cup and firmly flip it over. Gently shake the cup to release the custard, allowing the caramel syrup to cascade down the sides, creating a luscious sauce.
