Indulge in a decadent caramel-apple upside-down cake with a gooey, sweet apple topping in every bite.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 medium apple - peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.75 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and line the bottom of a 9-inch nonstick cake pan with parchment paper.
  • In a pan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon for the topping. Stir constantly and keep a close eye until the mixture comes to a boil.
  • Arrange apple slices elegantly over the parchment paper in the cake pan. Once the topping reaches a boil, swiftly remove it from the heat, drizzle it over the apple slices, and evenly distribute.
  • In a large bowl, cream together sugar and butter using an electric mixer until fluffy. Add eggs, vanilla extract, and almond extract, mixing until well combined. Stir in baking powder, baking soda, and 1/3 of the milk. Gradually add the remaining ingredients in the following order, mixing briefly after each addition: half of the flour, half of the remaining milk, the rest of the flour, and the remaining milk. Pour the batter into the pan.
  • Bake in the oven until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted in the center, approximately 35 minutes.
  • Take the cake out of the oven and allow it to rest for 5 minutes. Gently run a butter knife along the edges of the cake to loosen it from the pan. Use a serrated knife to trim the top of the cake to make it level. Flip the cake onto a serving plate and unmold it. Enjoy either warm or chilled.
