Indulge in a warm, delicious apple upside-down cake made effortlessly with Betty Crocker™ cake mix and frosting.
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup whipping cream
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 large cooking apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced (about 2 1/3 cups)
  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 2/3 cup from 1 tub (12 oz) Betty Crocker™ Whipped Fluffy White Frosting
  • 1/2 cup Cool Whip frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • Caramel topping, if desired
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Melt butter, whipping cream, and brown sugar in a 1-quart heavy saucepan over low heat. Once the butter is melted, pour the mixture into a 13x9-inch pan. Sprinkle with pecans and place sliced apples on top.
  • Using a large bowl, combine cake mix, water, oil, eggs, and apple pie spice. Use an electric mixer on low speed until moistened, then switch to medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally. Gently spoon the batter over the apple mixture.
  • Bake for 41 to 47 minutes until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Gently loosen the sides of the cake from the pan. Place a heatproof serving platter upside down on the pan, then carefully flip it over. Let it sit for about 1 minute so the caramel can drizzle over the cake. Remove the pan.
  • Combine frosting and whipped topping in a small bowl. Serve the warm cake topped with the frosting mixture and a drizzle of caramel topping. Keep covered in the refrigerator.
