Delicious Jewish bread, sweetened with honey, and beautifully braided with sesame or poppy seeds.
Ingredients:
  • 2.5 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 0.5 cup honey
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs, divided
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 8 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
Instructions:
  • Prepare your ingredients.
  • In a large bowl, gently pour in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over the water and allow it to soften and create a creamy foam, approximately 5 minutes.
  • Mix together honey, oil, 2 eggs, and salt until well combined. Gradually incorporate flour, adding 1 cup at a time, and keep mixing until dough forms.
  • Transfer it onto a lightly floured surface and knead until it's smooth and elastic.
  • Transfer the dough to a generously oiled, spacious bowl and ensure it is coated evenly.
  • Allow the dough to rest in a cozy spot with a towel over it until it doubles in size, approximately 1 ½ hours.
  • Deflate the dough by gently punching it down, then transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough in half and knead each portion for about 5 minutes, adding more flour as necessary to prevent sticking.
  • Divide each half into thirds and shape into 1 ½-inch diameter ropes.
  • Gently pinch the ends of the three ropes together and start braiding from the center. You can either keep it as a braid or shape it into a round loaf by connecting the ends, forming a circle, and pressing them together.
  • Prepare two baking trays by greasing them and then place the finished braid or round on each tray. Cover with a towel and allow them to rise for approximately 1 hour. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Whisk the remaining egg and generously brush over each braid, then sprinkle with poppy seeds.
  • Bake until golden brown in a preheated oven for about 40 minutes. Allow to cool on a wire rack for at least one hour before slicing.
  • Indulge and savor every bite!
