Challah bread makes the perfect French toast: sturdy for soaking, fluffy for a delightful bite.
Ingredients:
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 8 (1-inch thick) slices challah
  • For serving
  • Powdered sugar
  • Maple syrup
  • Sliced bananas or berries (optional)
Instructions:
  • Create the egg mixture for the French toast by whisking together eggs, buttermilk, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla in a 8x8 or 9x9 baking dish.
  • Soak the challah slices: Submerge one slice of challah in the egg mixture for 30 seconds, then flip and soak for another 30 seconds.
  • As you dip challah slices in the egg mixture, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large (12-inch) nonstick skillet over medium heat. Lift a slice of challah from the mixture, allowing excess liquid to drip off. Place it in the skillet and repeat with 3 more slices. Cook until golden brown and cooked through, flipping halfway through, for about 6 minutes. Serve on plates. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet and repeat the process with the rest of the challah slices.
  • To enjoy the challah French toast at its best, serve it warm and topped with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, a drizzle of maple syrup, and fresh sliced bananas or berries on top.
