Indulgent make-ahead French toast casserole with a crispy caramelized top, made with baguette or challah for the perfect brunch delight!
Ingredients:
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 6 (1-inch thick) slices French bread
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1.5 cups half-and-half cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon brandy-based orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier®)
Instructions:
  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in brown sugar and corn syrup until sugar dissolves. Transfer the mixture to a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Trim the crusts off the bread and layer them neatly in a baking dish. Combine eggs, half and half, vanilla, brandy, and salt in a bowl, then pour over the bread. Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, ideally overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) while allowing the baking dish to come to room temperature after removing from the refrigerator.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown and puffed, which should take around 35 to 40 minutes.
