Easily bake homemade French bread by hand with basic pantry staples!
Ingredients:
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1.5 cups hot water
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3.75 cups all-purpose flour, or more as needed
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions:
  • In a 2-cup measure, blend sugar into hot water until dissolved. Add yeast and stir gently until a foamy layer forms on top, around 5 minutes.
  • Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Gently stir from the middle until the mixture becomes sticky. Knead by hand for about 10 minutes, adding more flour if necessary, until the dough is elastic and not sticky.
  • Prepare a generously oiled large, clean bowl. Transfer the dough inside, rotating to ensure it is coated with oil. Cover it with a towel and allow it to rise in a warm spot until it has doubled in volume, approximately 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a roasting pan filled with water on the lower rack. Line a baking sheet with a silicone mat.
  • Gently press down on the dough and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Form either one large loaf or six sandwich loaves, shaping them with tapered ends. Put the loaves on the baking sheet, make 3-4 diagonal slashes on top, cover with a dry towel, and allow to rise until doubled, around 40 minutes.
  • Bake uncovered in the center of the preheated oven until the top turns a light golden brown, which should take about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the loaves.
