Indulgent and decadent chocolate chess pie, a simple and classic Southern dessert with butter, eggs, and sugar. Easy to make and irresistibly smooth.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pie crust, store-bought or homemade
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon instant espresso powder, optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Lightly sweetened whipped cream , for serving, optional
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F for blind baking or 350°F for not blind baking. Line a 9-inch pie pan with a pie crust, crimping the edge with a fork or pinching to form a fluted edge. Make sure there are no holes or cracks in the dough.
  • Prepare the crust: Achieve a perfectly crisp bottom by blind baking it. Grease a 12-inch piece of foil, place it in the crust oiled side down, shape it to fit the pan, and cover the edges. Fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake at 400°F until edges are dry, about 10 minutes. Remove from the oven, take out the weights and foil, then bake again until the center is dry, about 5 minutes. Gently press down any bubbles with a fork. Cool for 15 to 30 minutes until warm. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Prepare the filling by whisking sugar, cocoa powder, espresso powder (if using), and salt in a large bowl until smooth. Mix in melted butter, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla until well combined.
  • Spread the filling into the crust and delicately place the pie in the bottom oven rack. Bake at 350°F until the center is slightly jiggly, approximately 40-45 minutes. Whether you blind bake the crust or not, the baking time remains consistent.
  • Let the pie cool to room temperature on a rack. For later serving, refrigerate covered. Enjoy chilled or at room temperature; leftovers last 4 days in the fridge, or wrap tightly and freeze for a month. Share your love below!
