Spiced sugar cookies with creamy butter frosting.
Ingredients:
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 2 drops any color food coloring
Instructions:
  • Combine flour, cream of tarter, baking soda, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a bowl; set aside. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth using an electric mixer. Add eggs one at a time, blending well after each addition. Mix in vanilla with the last egg. Gently stir in the flour mixture until just combined. Cover dough and refrigerate overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Use Christmas cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Arrange the cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the edges turn golden brown, for 8 to 10 minutes. If using cutters with small parts like reindeer legs, adjust baking time to prevent overcooking. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the butter and confectioners' sugar until mixture is stiff. Mix in the vanilla and gradually add the milk until desired spreading consistency is achieved. Optional: Stir in food coloring. Ensure cookies are fully cooled before frosting.
