Delicious homemade beef stew loaded with meat, potatoes, and savory spices. Easy 4-step recipe to transport you to a cozy British pub. Great for lunch or hiding in the fridge for a secret treat!
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or shortening
  • 1 lb boneless beef chuck, tip or round roast, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 medium carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 large unpeeled potato, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 medium stalk celery, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 small onion, chopped (1/4 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 dried bay leaf
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 2 tablespoons Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
Instructions:
  • In a large skillet or Dutch oven, warm oil over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Add beef and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned on all sides.
  • Pour in the water, sprinkle in 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and add the pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat to a simmer. Cover and let it cook for 2 to 2 1/2 hours until the beef is almost tender.
  • Fold in all remaining ingredients, excluding the cold water and flour. Cover and simmer for approximately 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are perfectly tender. Discard the bay leaf before serving.
  • Combine cold water and flour in a tightly covered container and shake vigorously. Gradually stir this mixture into the beef until well incorporated. Heat the mixture until boiling, making sure to stir constantly. Allow it to boil for an additional minute until thickened.
