Elegant savory tarts perfect for brunch.
Ingredients:
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1.75 cups shortening
  • 0.5 cup cold water
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 8 slices bacon
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 0.5 cup chopped onion
  • 0.33333334326744 cup finely diced smoked ham
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • 8 eggs, beaten
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, minced
  • 1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, diced
  • 0.5 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 bunch green onions, chopped
  • 0.33333334326744 cup sliced almonds
Instructions:
  • Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Blend in shortening until mixture is crumbly. Stir in water, egg, and vinegar until just combined. Divide dough in half, cover, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and shape each piece into a round. Roll out the crust on a lightly floured surface and gently place into two 10-inch tart pans.
  • Bake tart shells in a hot oven until beautifully golden. Allow them to cool.
  • In a large, deep skillet, cook the bacon over medium-high heat until evenly browned. Drain, crumble, and set aside.
  • Cook the onion in butter until it becomes translucent. Divide the ham, bacon, and onion into two equal parts and sprinkle them evenly over the bottoms of the tart shells.
  • Combine cream and beaten eggs in a bowl. Season with salt, pepper, nutmeg, basil, and thyme. Pour the seasoned egg mixture over the bacon. Top with cream cheese cubes, grated Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, green onions, and sliced almonds.
  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake for 30-40 minutes. Allow to cool briefly, then slice and enjoy.
