Grass tip: Easily create beautiful, textured decorations with serrated edges in frosting.
Ingredients:
  • 2 boxes Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ Yellow Cake Mix
  • Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix boxes
  • Tray or cardboard covered with wrapping paper and plastic food wrap or foil
  • 2 1/2 tubs (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy Creamy White Frosting
  • Brown gel food color
  • Yellow gel food color
  • 3 large chocolate-covered candies
  • 1 stick chewy chocolate licorice
  • 1 roll Betty Crocker™ Fruit Roll-Ups™ Strawberry Chewy Fruit Snack (from 5-oz box)
  • Betty Crocker™ White Writing Gel, if desired
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (or 325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease the bottoms of two 13x9-inch pans with baking spray that includes flour. Prepare and bake the cake mixes according to the instructions for 13x9-inch pans. Allow the cakes to cool for 10 minutes before removing from the pans and transferring to cooling racks. Let the cakes cool completely for about 1 hour. Place the cooled cakes on a work surface and gently position the templates as indicated. Refer to the provided link for the diagram and templates.
  • Using the templates as a guide, cut the cake into desired shapes. Place the cake pieces on a tray as demonstrated. Chill in the freezer for 1 hour to make frosting easier.
  • Create a delightful light brown frosting by tinting 1 tub with brown and yellow gels. Gently spread the frosting all over the cake to lock in the crumbs, using the remaining frosting to affix the nose, ears, and legs onto the cake.
  • First, combine brown and yellow gels to tint half of the frosting a rich dark brown color. Then, using a decorating bag fitted with a grass tip, pipe the ears onto the dessert. Next, tint the remaining frosting in the tub a lighter brown by adding brown and yellow gels. Proceed to frost the head using the grass tip, and add definition near the eyebrows by applying more frosting with the grass tip.
  • Frost the rest of the dog's body with the light brown frosting using a grass tip. Attach chocolate-covered candies on the face for eyes and nose. Slice the licorice into 8 thin strips and position them on the feet to outline the paws. Cut a fruit snack to create a collar and tag, then place it around the neck. Use writing gel to write the dog's initial on the tag. Keep the finished dog loosely covered at room temperature.
